Young Carers

Our Young Carers project is currently supporting over 100 young carers across the Vale. This project is designed to provide young carers with the support they need to manage their caring responsibilities, learn new life skills, make friends, and have fun!

Young Carers Youth Club: The Young Carers Youth Club, located at the YMCA Hub, Court Road, Barry, CF63 4EE, is open every Thursday and Friday evening during term time. The club sessions are divided by age groups:

  • Juniorsโ€™ Club (primary school age): Thursdays from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM.
  • Seniorsโ€™ Club (comprehensive school age): Fridays from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM.

Please note, the youth club is exclusively for young people who have been accepted onto the project.

Additional Support Services: The project also offers various forms of respite and support, including:

  • Buddy Sessions: Small group respite activities.
  • 1:1 Support: Personalised support tailored to individual needs.
  • Family Trips & Support: Enjoyable trips and additional support for families.
  • Young Carer ID Cards: Identification to access support and resources.
  • Residential Trips: Overnight trips for relaxation and fun.

Who is a Young Carer?

A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who takes on the responsibility of looking after someone, usually a family member, who is ill, disabled, elderly, suffering from mental distress, or dependent on drugs and/or alcohol. This can involve various tasks such as:

Domestic Activities: Washing, cleaning, cooking.

Household Management: Food shopping, heavy lifting.

Financial & Practical Management: Handling bills, collecting benefits, or working to support household income.

Personal Care: Assisting with dressing, washing, or eating.

Emotional Care: Providing comfort and support.

Sibling Care: Taking siblings to school andย  generally looking after them.

Medical Care: Administering medication, assisting with appointments.
